Fair question, and you're not the only one asking it. This comes up constantly.

Here is what's actually on the record. The Drug Abuse (Prevention and Control) Amendment Bill 2026 passed the House with support from the government, the opposition, and the independent member. That is not a normal thing to happen in any parliament. Cannabis reform here has not been a fight between parties. It is one of the few things everyone actually agreed on.

On the registration question specifically, the Prime Minister addressed it directly on his own call-in program. Asked how licensing for cultivation, production, import, export, and supply would work, he said the licensing regime has not been fully developed yet, that consultations are underway, and that the government is in the process of contracting a consultant to build that framework. He also explained why decriminalization came first, before the licensing system. Waiting for the full framework to be built before removing the criminal risk would have left people, his own example was Rastafarians trying to educate the public about the plant, exposed to arrest in the meantime. So the order was deliberate. Decriminalize first, build the licensing system second.

That second part takes longer than passing a law does, in any country, under any government. It is a sequencing decision, not a stall.

What you can do right now: your 4 plants and your 56 grams are protected under current law today, registration system or not. Keep your own documentation, dates and receipts if you bought seeds or clones, in case a registry opens later and back-registration matters. And keep the questions coming here.
