The Nyabinghi Order — understanding the oldest mansion of Rastafari

Bevon Findley1/31/20260 replies

The House of Nyabinghi is one of the oldest mansions (denominations) within Rastafari. Named after a legendary East African woman — "she who possesses many things" — the order reached Jamaica through a 1935 newspaper article.

Often described as "warrior monks" — comparable to the Levites of the Tanakh — the Nyabinghi maintain specific disciplines: no meat, uncut hair. But these are ORDER practices, not Rastafari requirements. Just as not every Christian is a monk, not every Rasta is Nyabinghi.

What do you know about the Nyabinghi tradition? How should the law distinguish between the broader faith and its specific orders?
