Cannabis in African Healing Traditions
Across sub-Saharan Africa, cannabis has been used by healers for centuries — for wound treatment, fever, and spiritual protection. In the Sotho tradition it was smoked during childbirth. In the Congo basin it was part of initiation rites. This knowledge predates Western pharmacology by generations.
What African or Indigenous healing traditions do you know that involve the plant?
- Were you taught any traditional plant uses growing up?
- How do you see African herbalism being honored (or ignored) in modern cannabis?
- What traditional knowledge would you want preserved?
